Windows 7 RC – it can only get better now

5th May 2009 By Sten One Comment

I have been using Windows 7 Beta for more than four months now and I have to admit, I have never ever been more satisfied with Windows. It’s really nice and fun when everything (most things) works like it has to be, the OS doesn’t die from every little operation and most things are actually a lot faster than they were in previous versions of Windows, especially in Vista.

Today Microsoft made public 7’s Release Candidate and of course I installed that, too. Unlike the last time, the amount of RCs they are giving away isn’t limited and the whole downloading and getting the key process was very speedy and neat. Download took about 15 minutes and another few for burning the image to a DVD.

Then I got a little disappointment – you can’t “officially” upgrade from Beta to RC. Why is that? It’s idiotic that I would have to have a clean install and then install all the other programmes I’m using again, when I could just upgrade the Beta. Luckily, there are people who have come up with a solution to that problem. It’s an unofficial solution and Microsoft doesn’t recommend using it, but I did and I’m happy to report that everything works just fine.

The install or upgrade itself took an enormous two hours, which was another little disappointment. I remember times when Windows installed in 30-45 minutes, but I guess the more the operating system has in it, the longer it takes to install it. It was pretty boring, it didn’t even tell you about new features like XP install does, you would just have to sit back and relax on your own, or, as I did, watch telly.

The thing I’m most happy about is that after the upgrade, the PC wasn’t any slower than it was before. In fact, in some areas it’s even faster. For example, the Beta took some time after booting to run wireless card drivers and thus it took some time to connect to internet. With the RC, it happens a lot faster. Which is nice.

The weird thing is, Microsoft promise that they’ve made more space for icons on the Quick Launch bar or the Taskbar, but they actually haven’t. I have 15 icons on the Taskbar, I have the smallest Taskbar size, and I can’t see any difference – the icons still take up the same amount of space. Which is annoying, because the icons themselves are a lot smaller than the space every single icon takes up. Microsoft should really work on it.

Other than that, everything looks and works perfectly. There are some changes to the Beta, but they’re all positive ones and the operating system works fast and nicely. I can honestly say, I’m happy with my Windows 7. And I hope that the final product will be even better one. Because it can only get better now.
