Estonia’s results: the most hated party got 2 seats –Updated
And times like this make me glad I don’t live in this country any more. Turns out that Estonian Centre Party, the most left populist party in Estonia and the only party in the country who has a co-operation agreement with United Russia – the Putin’s party – got two seats in today’s European Parliament elections. The Centre Party (don’t let the name fool you) is the most hated party in Estonia, and nevertheless it got enough votes to get two seats. It previously had one.
The Conservative party IRL got one seat and right-wing liberal Reform party also one. Social Democrats got also one seat and an independent candidate Indrek Tarand, who actually got the most votes, got one seat, too.
Unfortunately the website of Estonian Electoral Commission died under huge load, so I don’t know the amount of votes the parties and independents got. But as soon as I know it, I’ll publish them.
On another and much happier note, it seems that right-wing parties across Europe gained in these elections. More soon.
UPDATE:
So here are the official amount of votes each party/independent got:
Estonian Centre Party: 102,505
Independent Indrek Tarand: 102,422
Reform party: 60,600
IRL: 48,430
Social Democrats: 34,504
See the unfairness: Centre Party got only 83 more votes than the Independent, and they get two seats, and of course, the independent couldn’t get more than one, for himself. This is what closed lists do – it’s utterly unfair. People want to vote for people, not parties. And to that end, American style open voting – the best man wins – is the fairest and most democratic.
Parties and independents that didn’t get in:
Green: 10,818
Independent Martin Helme: 9,814
People’s Union: 8,852
Independent Dimitry Klensky; 7,046
The United Left: 3,437
Libertas: 2,205
Christian Democrats 1,707
Russian Party: 1,248
Farmers’ Party: 607
Independent Juri Zhuravlyov: 576
Independent Mart Oigus: 292
Independent Taira Aasa: 271
