Humanity China’s way – injection instead of shooting

16th June 2009 By Sten No Comment

China is making real progress in killing its people – by the end of the year, the death penalty will no longer be carried out by shooting at the back of the head, but a more “humane” way – lethal injection.

Chinese newspaper Beijing Youth Daily said that the reason for such makeover is to make the death penalty less cumbersome and to reduce the trauma to all involved – including executioners and family, according to the Times.

Each dose of potassium cyanide – the drug used to kill convicts – costs £30. By the end of the year a special room near Beijing’s Number One Detention Centre will be allocated for execution by lethal injection, the Times reports.

According to Amnesty International, 1,718 people were executed in China last year and at least 7,003 were known to have been sentenced to death. However, the real number is believed to be significantly higher. It’s known that China executes more people than the rest of the world combined.
