Paper: Cameron not opposing Blair as EU president

17th June 2009 By Sten One Comment

According to the Times, Conservative leader David Cameron will give former Prime Minister Tony Blair a free run if he tries to become the EU’s first President.

The newspaper claims that Cameron has told his senior colleagues that they should do nothing to oppose Blair’s candidacy, if the Lisbon Treaty, which creates the role, is ratified later this year.

The issue is awkward for Mr Cameron, who has repeatedly refused to answer questions about a Blair candidacy on the ground that the Tories oppose the treaty that creates the post, the newspaper says.

European Prime Ministers could choose their first president as early as December if the Irish vote “yes” in an October referendum and the other remaining countries yet to ratify then sign up.

Cameron has promised a referendum on Lisbon Treaty, but it might be ratified without asking the public by the Labour Government before General Election.
