Tories: we don’t want Blair as EU President

17th June 2009 By Sten One Comment

The Conservatives denied today’s report by the Times and affirmed that they would not back former Prime Minister Tony Blair as a candidate for the president of the European Union.

Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague said that the Tories are not in favour of a president of the European Union at all, according to Reuters. “That story is absolutely without foundation,” he said. “It does not represent in any way the thinking of the Conservative leadership.”

The Times said today reported that Conservative leader David Cameron told senior colleagues they should not oppose a Blair candidacy if the EU’s Lisbon reform treaty came into force and the post was created.

Hague said that the Lisbon Treaty that would create EU presidency, would be either in force or have been rejected by the time Britain holds its elections, meaning that the Tories would probably have no say about who was the first President, according to the report.

“The scenario is unlikely to come about. But if it did, we would not be a supporter of Tony Blair becoming the president of the EU,” he affirmed.

We know the EU is the Tory fault line, but splits at the top over this? Already?
