Ireland to hold new referendum on Lisbon Treaty
Ireland agreed today to re-run the referendum on Lisbon Treaty that was rejected in the country a year ago.
Irish voters will be asked to try again in early October, after a series of legal guarantees stating that the treaty will not change Ireland’s taxation, abortion laws or military neutrality were agreed by the 27 EU leaders at their summit in Brussels, the Times reports.
EU leaders now hope that the Treaty will come into force in November.
The polls suggest that Irish voters will pass the treaty. That would pave the way for a new post of President of the European Council, for which Tony Blair is understood to be a leading candidate, according to the report.
This is a very worrisome development, I must admit. Europe is firmly moving towards a federation with unelected leaders and the people of Europe seem to have no say in this – Ireland is pretty much the only country among the 27 where the people are actually asked. Gordon Brown promised a referendum in the UK, too, but by now he seems to have forgotten all about it.
The only hope is the Irish will come to their senses and vote against the Treaty in October, and/or the election in Britain will take place before the Treaty comes to effect and the new Tory Government would put it on a referendum here, too. The people of Britain showed clearly in last European Parliament election, what they think, and it certainly wasn’t acceptance of the Lisbon Treaty.
Tory MEP Daniel Hannan ironizes sweetly over the issue, too.

The Happy Family
Once upon a time there was a family treaty-ing themselves to a visit in Lisbon.
On the sunny day that it was they decided to go out together.
Everyone had to agree on what they would do.
“So”, said Daddy Brusselsprout “Let’s all go for a picnic!”
“No”, said Aunt Erin, “I don’t want to”.
Did they then think of something else, that they might indeed agree on?
Oh yes they did?
Oh no they didn’t!
Daddy Brusselsprout asked all the others anyway, isolating Erin, and then asked her if instead, she would like to go with them to the park and eat out of a lunch basket….
Kids, we’ll finish this story tomorrow, and remember, in the EU yes means yes and no means yes as well!
Thank you, Peter, for that comment. You’re very right. In the EU, a no means yes as well.
All we can do is fight against that utter insanity.
