Senior Tory: expenses are my personal life
London Assembly member Brian Coleman refused to publish his itemized expense claims voluntarily, even though Mayor Boris Johnson, his advisers, and the 24 other members have all agreed to voluntarily publish their own, the Daily Mail reports.
One of his claims which has been made public was £378 for a taxi, which waited for him while he attended a banquet.
He said he had “nothing to hide” but felt his expenses had been fully audited and there was no need to publicize the details.
“I won’t do it voluntarily. It’s none of the public’s business. They have copied well without knowing this kind of detail for 75 years. They are not entitled to drool over our personal lives. I’m not going to help the mad, the bad and the sad, the bloggers on the internet. I’m not pandering to mob rule. It undermines democracy to suggest that all MPs, all politicians are the spawn of Beezlebub. Politicans with lower expenses tend to be the politicians who do least work. Those with higher expenses are the ones who do most work.”
Wrong, Mr Coleman, dead wrong. It IS public’s business, as it’s public’s money you’re using for your cab rides and other “expenses” you possibly cannot afford from your own pocket.
And no, we the mad, the bad and the sad are not entitled to drool over your personal lives. But we sure as hell are entitled to drool over your public life. Aren’t expenses you claim from taxpayers’ pocket related to your public life, your job as the Assembly member? Because, if your expenses that you claim from public money are your “personal life”, then, Mr Coleman, you have been doing some very naughty no-nos. Have you gone grocery shopping with public money and now you don’t want the public know you bought private items with it?
I think David Cameron should explain some things about public service to Mr Coleman. Although, considering that the idiot feels that using public money is his personal life, I doubt if talking some sense would help.
