I stumbled upon a great reader’s comment on the Washington Post to an article written by Israel’s ex-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The article itself was quite rubbish, pretty much all the same Olmert has said before, justifying his actions etc. But the comment by someone named “nlkatz” caught my eye because it’s the same thing I’ve been telling over and over:

Why did the Palestinians reject Olmert’s offer of the end of 2008?

Probably for the very same reason they rejected the Peel Commission offer to set up an independent state, 1937.

For the same reason they rejected the UN offer to set up their own nation-state, 1947.

For no other reason that they opted to do nothing in setting up a state between the years 1949 and 1967 in the West Bank, Gaza and eastern Jerusalem, during which time the territories were “cleansed” of any Jew previously living there and they were under full, total Arab control.

They also rejected Menahem Begin and Anwar Saadat’s offer of 1978.

They proceeded to reject the Barak Clinton offer of 2000.

They opted not to set up a state in the Gaza Strip in 2005 after Israel evicted every single Jew living or doing military service there.

And they rejected Olmert’s offer of 2008.

The reason: Each of the offers also included two elements: 1)The right of Israel to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people. And, 2) All offers were to be considered the end of conflict.

The Muslim-Arab world in general and that of the Land of Israel / Palestine in particular simply can’t accept Israel’s right to be, to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people. And an end of conflict means that they can’t continue to pursue their real goal: to wipe Israel off the face of earth.

Until and unless we appreciate this mind-set, little can be expected in terms of reaching an accommodation of peaceful coexistence between Arab and Jew, between Israel and its Arab neighbors, something the vast majority of Jews, within and without Israel have been eager, very eager to achieve.

That is the ultimate truth. There will never be peace because Arabs don’t want it, as they would lose the enemy they so desperately need for existing. Therefore, Israel’s duty will forever be defending itself and its people.
