Hospital officials say Felipe Massa is in “life-threatening” condition after undergoing emergency surgery on a skull fracture following a violent crash at Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying, the Canadian Press reports.
Officials at the AEK military hospital said Massa will be kept sedated on a respirator overnight in the intensive care unit.
Medical director Peter Bazso said at a news conference that “Massa’s condition is serious, life-threatening but stable.”

Felipe Massa suffered a fractured skull in today’s accident at Hungaroring, and he had an operation in a Budapest hospital.
According to Budapest Times, he came out of surgery in the Honved Hospital in Budapest on Saturday evening. Spokeswoman of the hospital, Judit Bozi Pacser said that an announcement on his condition will be made on Sunday.
Associated Press said that 28-year-old Massa sustained a fractured skull.

Felipe Massa will miss Sunday’s Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix after crashing heavily in Saturday’s qualifying session at the Hungaroring circuit, DPA reports.
“He is conscious, which is the most important thing,” Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni said.
Massa crashed heavily into a tyre wall in second qualifying after being hit on the helmet by a piece of flying debris believed to have come from the Brawn GP car of Rubens Barrichello.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso grabbed pole for Renault in a chaotic qualifying session that was delayed when Felipe Massa crashed head on into a tyre wall, the BBC reports.
The session ended in confusion after a computer timing system failed leaving drivers unsure of their final places. Eventually it emerged that Red Bull duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber would start second and third in Budapest.

Felipe Massa was involved in an accident during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying which caused the final session to be significantly delayed, the BBC reports.
The Ferrari driver applied his brakes but went head on into a tyre wall at Turn Four after a piece of debris on the track appeared to hit his helmet.

The last British survivor of the World War I trenches, Harry Patch, has died at the age of 111, the BBC reports.
Patch was conscripted into the Army aged 18 and fought in the Battle of Passchendaele at Ypres in 1917 in which more than 70,000 British soldiers died.

A Russian warship preparing for a holiday celebration accidentally fired a dummy artillery shell into the courtyard of an apartment building on Friday, the AFP reports.
Nobody was hurt but the shell’s impact broke windows and left a small crater outside the nine-storey apartment building in Vladivostok, a port city on Russia’s Pacific Ocean coast close to China and Japan.
