Salmond gets desperate over independence
Apparently Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond is getting desperate over the non-existent support for Scottish independence, so now he has promised that Scots would be allowed to keep British citizenship if Scotland became independent.
The left-wing Scottish National Party (SNP) administration at Holyrood has for the first time raised the concept of people holding “dual citizenship” following Scottish independence, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Opposition parties said the promise was Salmond’s most desperate attempt yet to convince a sceptical Scottish public to back the break-up of Britain. A recent YouGov opinion poll said that barely a quarter of the population back the break-up of Britain.
Salmond has also promised that a separate Scotland would keep the Pound, at least initially, and even that the Bank of England would continue to set interest rates north of the Border. Previously Salmond has ruled that the Queen would remain head of state.
Salmond is indeed very desperate, as the support for independence is waning and therefore he can’t realise his dream of an independent Scotland. Apparently the power to release mass murdering terrorists from jail isn’t yet enough.
I am naturally against any attempt to break up the Empire and therefore I’m against Scottish independence, too. But I also consider every country under the Queen’s realm to be part of the United Kingdom, whether it’s Gibraltar, Canada or Australia. Hell, I even consider India to be part of the Empire, no matter what they think over there. So in that light, if Salmond even gets his dream come true, it won’t change the Empire. Of course, I’d prefer if also the Government of the whole Empire would remain in London.
On a more practical note though, I think that if Salmond even calls a referendum on independence, the Government of the United Kingdom should abolish the Scottish Parliament and Government. Such separatist acts should not be tolerated (and, for example, haven’t been tolerated in Northern Ireland, so why should Scotland be any different?), it’s the duty of the Government of the UK to keep the country intact. And last time I checked, treason was still illegal. But what else such separatist moves are?
Otherwise, it really will be a lost Empire.
