NATO’s Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has called for a new strategic partnership with Russia, the BBC reports.
In his first major foreign policy address as NATO chief, Rasmussen called for a “joint review” with Moscow of global security challenges. He was speaking in Brussels the day after the US announced it was shelving plans for controversial missile defence bases in Poland and the Czech Republic.
“I would like Russia and NATO to agree to carry out a joint review of the new 21st century security challenges, to serve as a firm basis for our future co-operation,” he said. ”We should explore the potential for linking the US, NATO and Russia missile defence systems at an appropriate time.”
He called on Moscow for a “genuine new beginning in our relationship, in our own interests and that of the entire international community”.
Apparently, everybody has lost their minds. And if one could have expected scrapping the European missile defence shield from US President Barack Obama, such idiotic comments from Rasmussen are really shocking. After all, considering Rasmussen’s warm relationships with Eastern European right-wing governments and leaders, he should know what kind of a threat Russia poses. And every olive branch to this dangerous pariah only makes it stronger, and therefore more dangerous.
Have people really forgotten all lessons they should have learnt from history? Fo’ fuck’s sake, Russia’s aggression against its democratic neighbour Georgia took place only a bloody year ago.
What Russia deserves is isolation, not kissing on both cheeks and on one other place.
