MPs to pay back almost £100,000
The expenses payback continued yesterday as dozens more MPs came forward to announce that they had been asked to refund money to the taxpayer, £97,250 of payback requests have now been made public, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Still, many MPs are refusing to disclose how much they have been asked to pay up following the audit carried out by Sir Thomas Legg into claims dating back five years. Of the 94 who revealed the contents of their letters from Sir Thomas yesterday, 38 had been asked to make payments including Colin Challen, Labour MP for Morley and Rothwell, who was told to return £9,000.
Bill Rammell, the Armed Forces Minister, will repay £2,782 and the DUP’s William McCrea is returning £5,329. Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness will return £3,000 after submitting two months’ rent twice, and Jacqui Smith, the former home secretary who was forced to apologise to the House of Commons this week for designating a room in her sister’s house as her main residence, allowing her to claim second home expenses on her family house, has been asked to return £1,500.
