Livni told Abbas not to accept Olmert’s peace offering
Former US Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk said that Israel’s current opposition leader, then-Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told the Arab leadership in Judea and Samaria not to accept the peace offering by then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who had offered Arab leader Mahmoud Abbas 95-98% of the territories for a “Palestinian” state.
Indyk said that “the Prime Minister was about to have an indictment filed against him and the Foreign Minister herself specifically told both the Americans and the Palestinians: don’t you dare sign the agreement”, Jerusalem Post reports.
Livni denied the report, saying that she was not involved in the contacts between Olmert and Abbas. “When the Israeli offer was made public, I publicly announced that I did not support it,” she said. “I had no need to speak behind Olmert’s back.”
Livni claimed that she was opposed to Olmert’s proposed peace plan because it called for the return of thousands of Palestinian refugees to the country, and would lead to an international force gaining control over Jerusalem’s Old City.
Olmert offered Abbas 95-98% of Judea and Samaria, including Jerusalem, but according to Abbas, he rejected it because it was “not enough”.
