UK 12th in world Prosperity Index
The United Kingdom is 12th in this year’s Prosperity Index, measured by wealth and happiness, dragged down by low scores for education, health, domestic security and levels of personal freedom.
The Legatum Prosperity Index ranks 104 countries, covering 90 per cent of the world’s population. The table is based on a definition of prosperity that combines economic growth with detailed measures of happiness and quality of life.
The UK came second in the world for entrepreneurship and innovation and scored better than five of the countries ranked above it for overall economic fundamentals. However, the UK is burdened by sluggish performance in its educational institutions, its domestic security, its health outcomes, and even citizens’ views of how free they are to create the life they would like to have.
The most prosperous country in the world, according to the Index, is Finland, followed by Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. UK territories of Australia and Canada are 6th and 7th, respectively. The United States is 9th and New Zealand 10th. Our neighbour, the Republic of Ireland, is 11th.
At the bottom of the list sits Zimbabwe.
