We don’t live in a free country – and that won’t change either
Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson once said that “we don’t live in a free country”. Well, it’s true. But a recent development that concerns the Conservative Party – the party which we have hoped to bring change into the matter – makes it quite clear: this will not change.
Is the fact that our personal liberties don’t exist anymore really beyond the point of no return? Apparently so. Because nothing else can explain the story of a fellow blogger Cardiff Blogger, who preferred leaving the Conservative Party instead letting it to curb his personal liberties to say what he feels.
A week last Sunday on Twitter I was watching The X Factor Results show on Sunday and tweeting along with the show, ranting my opinions on each contestant like most young people too poor to go out drinking. In the heat of the moment I referred to one contestant as looking like a ‘pikey’. Unbeknownst to me, this is an apparent racist term, something which I wasn’t aware of and used it to describe someone who was rather scruffy. Anyway, a couple of tweeters were adamant that I was a racist and as I was Conservative Future Chairman for UWIC at the time they said they were complaining to David Cameron.
In the heat of the moment I regrettably referred to them both as ‘cunts’, which I must say released a lot of anger and tension, I fully recommend it, as does Malcolm Tucker.
Anyway, the following Tuesday I had a call from a person rather high up in the Conservative Party (who shall remain nameless) saying that there had been a complaint addressed to David Cameron that he needed sorting out. He advised me that I should “write a grovelling apology on Twitter” and he would put the mistake down to “inexperience”. Also, after I apologised he said “maybe you will think again before pressing ’send’”.
Looking back on it, I’m furious with myself for apologising and rolling over when he insisted. I’m done with party politics. I may still be a Conservative voter and the people I’ve met in the party have all been fantastic, but the truth is that I can’t be doing with being told what to say, think, write etc. It’s not me.
This is how far we have gone. Party politics now tells people which words they can and can’t say. And not just any party, but the party that is supposed to stand for freedom and liberty.
I remember a while back there was an idiotic column in the Guardian on how Richard Hammond said “pikey” in Top Gear, adding also that he himself is a bit of a pikey. The column by some Jodie Matthews, whoever that is, indicated that Hamster is therefore a “racist” and that Top Gear is a “racist” show. Which just proves my point – one could expect that kind of idiocy from the ultra-left, but if it comes from the right, it seems to be unreal, like a bad, bad dream.
And then there’s a matter of calling people “cunts”. Isn’t that supposed to be between the two people engaged in the exchange of words? If someone calls you something you don’t agree with, you call that someone back, kick in his teeth or whatever. It’s a highly private matter. IT’S A HIGHLY PRIVATE MATTER, do you fucking get it?
Also, might I add, if a snitch is not a cunt, then what is?
You see, banning people from saying what they feel and banning words is communism. And that is not just a figure of speech, because I have seen communism in action and I don’t take it lightly. Yes, words may hurt people, but so may a million other things that are not forbidden. I strongly acknowledge that freedom of speech comes with responsibility and if one feels that a word said by someone has hurt him or her, then one can take appropriate measures. But it will remain a private matter between the two, and has nothing to do with any organisation the purported offender is affiliated with.
I am deeply disappointed in Conservative approach towards the issue. And I think that in order to redeem the reputation as a party of freedom, David Cameron needs to apologise to Cardiff Blogger. How else could we take him and the Tories seriously on the issues of liberty, if this happens inside the party?
I will not stop supporting the Conservative Party over this affair. That is how it unfortunately works – you choose the party you support by the fact that you agree with most of their policies. But one possibly cannot support all policies, and that applies to all people and all parties. If you want a party that you agree with 100%, you form your own one man party, because the minute someone else comes along, there will be a difference of opinions on something. But that is perfectly normal – there are as many opinions as there are people.
But of course I don’t blame Cardiff Blogger for being offended and leaving the party politics. He has every right to be angry and he has every right to make whatever choice he sees fit. That’s also how it works – you have a choice to do what you feel. And I do think that he’s entitled to an apology by the Conservative Party.
The sad fact is, curbing our freedoms will only get worse. And apparently it doesn’t matter which politicians make the calls and pull the strings. Very unfortunate. But only we the people can change it, by not agreeing with taking away our liberties. Apathy is our worst enemy.
Here’s a little motivational call from Manowar:
Stand and fight
Live by your heart
Always one more try
I’m not afraid to die
Stand and fight
Say what you feel
Born with a heart of steel

Many thanks for your support, I think ‘cunt’ was a lot less offensive than calling someone a racist who quite clearly is not.
Ah well, I’m enjoying going freelance.
