Latvia and Finland are theoretically prepared to support Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves for the President of the European Union, Estonian media reports.

Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis said that Ilves is an honourable candidate for the unelected EU presidency.

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen said today that Finland is ready to support Ilves as the EU President. He emphasised, however, that the President will be a compromise between all member states of the European Union, big or small.

Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip said yesterday that Estonia will propose Ilves’s candidacy for the high role, created by the Lisbon Treaty that will come into effect on 1st December. The President would be elected on 19th November in Brussels by the Prime Ministers of all 27 member states.

President Ilves himself said that he hopes that the President of the EU will be elected by the principle of unity and equality.

First politician to mention Ilves as a potential candidate for EU presidency was Member of the European Parliament and an influential Polish politician Jacek Sarysz-Wolski.

Toomas Hendrik Ilves is a moderate centre-left politician, born in Sweden and lived and studied in the United States. He has served as the Estonian Foreign Minister, Member of Parliament, Member of the European Parliament and an Ambassador. Prior to becoming the President of Estonia, he was the member of the centre-left Social Democratic Party. He left the party, because Estonian law forbids the President being a member of any political party.
