To my surprise, the readers of The Empire Chronicles have voted former Prime Minister Tony Blair as their favourite candidate for the EU presidency, despite the fact that his chances to nail the post are slimmer than ever.

42 per cent of the respondents – 620 people – said that Blair would be the best candidate to become the European Union’s first President. Former Czech President Vaclav Havel came in second with 22% support – 329 votes.

The Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Jean-Claude Juncker, who is one of the current favourites for the Presidency among member states, came third with 20% vote – 301 people think he’s the best option.

The rest of the candidates only received single percentages. Seven per cent – 103 people – think that former Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern is the most suitable for the job, four per cent – 56 people – think Estonia’s President Toomas Hendrik Ilves should be elected EU President. Three per cent – 48 people – preferred Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, and 13 people (2%) thought former Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen would be an appropriate choice.

Altoghether, 1,470 people voted.

The EU summit where all member states cast their votes for the newly created EU President, starts tomorrow in Brussels. The post of the President was created by the Lisbon Treaty that comes into effect on 1st December.
