21st November 2009 By Sten No Comment

British shoppers have to pay 22 per cent more for their Christmas present shopping than American consumers, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Clothes, accessories, toys, and electrical goods all cost considerably more in Britain than in America, adding hundreds of pounds to the cost of Christmas shopping for consumers in this country.

In research for the Daily Telegraph, undertaken by the price comparison website Kelkoo, a basket of ten popular items costs £3,066 in Britain and £2,394 in America – with the mark up in Britain equating to 22%.

The biggest difference was on a Nikon d700 camera, which costs £1,457 from the cheapest British website, b4utele.com, including delivery charges. The same camera from the cheapest American website costs £1,245.

A pair of Levi’s men’s jeans from House of Fraser costs £69.99, but the same item of clothing from WorkingGear.com in the States, is less than half the price for American consumers at £26.27.
