Boris won’t attend Hanukkah menorah lighting
London Mayor Boris Johnson apparently doesn’t have time this year to attend the annual Hanukkah menorah lighting at Trafalgar Square, instead a deputy mayor is attending.
According to Chabad’s website, the Hanukkah Live event at Trafalgar Square on 16th December will be attended by an unnamed deputy mayor, the photo on the Chabad’s flyer suggests it’s Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes.
While it’s nice that Deputy Mayor Barnes finds time to attend the event, it’s very strange and sad that the Mayor himself neglects such an important event. Especially when he finds time to give a speech in a mosque during Ramadan, urging non-Muslims to fast to understand their “Muslim neighbour” better.
Last year, Boris did attend the menorah lighting at Trafalgar Square, and in 2007, the normally antisemitic Mayor “Red” Ken Livingstone took the time to light the Hanukkiah.
