The most important events of 2010
Next year will bring many interesting developments and events around the world, it’s an Olympic year with winter games taking place in Canada, big year for football as FIFA World Cup takes place in South Africa, there will be two solar eclipses, and General Election will take place in the United Kingdom, although the date for the latter will have to be settled yet.
Here is a little overview of the most important events that are due to take place in 2010.
January
1st – Spain takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Sweden.
1st – Macedonia will ban smoking in all public places, even including bars and venues that are operating outside on open space.
4th – The Burj Dubai in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the tallest man-made structure ever built, will be completed.
15th – Annular eclipse occurs in Indian ocean. It will visible as a partial eclipse in much of Africa, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia. It will be seen as annular within a narrow stretch of 300 km width across Central Africa, Maldives, South Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, North Sri Lanka, Burma and China. It is also the longest annular eclipse in the 21st century.
February
12th – 28th – The 2010 Winter Olympics will take place in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.
May
1st – 30th October – 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
June
3rd – The last day to hold the General Election in the United Kingdom. General opinion is, however, that it will take place earlier, possibly in March.
11th – 11th July – 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
July
1st – Belgium takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Spain.
11th – Total solar eclipse. It will be visible over much of the southern Pacific Ocean, touching several small islands including Tuamotu in French Polynesia and Easter Island, as well as the southern tips of Argentina and Chile in South America.
September
29th – Final mission of American Space Shuttle (STS-134) is slated to begin. Space Shuttle Discovery is set to fly one of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometers and ExPRESS Logistics Carriers to the International Space Station and leave them there permanently. The Space Shuttle program will be replaced by Project Constellation which will include new space vehicles called Ares I and Ares V launch vehicles, as well as the Orion capable of traveling to the Space Station, to the Moon, and eventually to Mars.
