Ford Focus was the second most popular car bought last year.

1,994,999 new cars were registered last year, and the number of new cars sold in 2009 dipped only 6.4%.

Car sales were boosted by the Government’s “cash-for-bangers” car-scrappage scheme, introduced in May, the Independent reports.

December sales were 38.9% up on those of the same month in 2008.

The best-selling cars in 2009:
1. Ford Fiesta
2. Ford Focus
3. Vauxhall Corsa
4. Vauxhall Astra
5. Volkswagen Golf
6. Peugeot 207
7. Mini
8. BMW 3 Series
9. Vauxhall Insignia
10. Ford Mondeo
