We Will Rock You – and they did
Yesterday I had the pleasure to see the We Will Rock You musical in the Dominion Theatre, and, tell you the truth, they really did rock. Me and everyone else there.
It’s a comedy from the future, set in about 2300s when all musical instruments are banned and the world is ruled by a corporation called GlobalSoft, and the Earth is called Planet Mall. Like in today’s world, most people go with the flow and don’t care what’s happening to them and around them, and then there’s a bunch of people called the Bohemians that fight against the somewhat Orwellian all-controlled idiocracy.
One guy, who calls himself Galileo Figaro, says that he dreams words that no one can know and that are supposedly written only in a long-lost scripture. He meets a girl, an outcast grunge girl and they befriend and eventually fall in love. Galileo calls the girl Scaramouche. They eventually meet the Bohemians who quite Matrix-ish think that Galileo is the one, the Dreamer, and he’s supposed to save the world from GlobalSoft and its evil leader, Killer Queen. Then, the “action” picks up…
It is undoubtedly a naive plot and definitely an absurd comedy, but throughout the show, the actors sing Queen’s songs. Many of the lyrics, however, are changed to fit the scenery, and that actually disturbed me a lot. But, that was also the only negative emotion about the musical.
Queen is definitely one of my all-time favourite bands and the music is incredibly good, utterly powerful and very inspiring. So, even if one doesn’t like musicals, it’s a must-see show for everyone who loves good music and Queen.
So, if you haven’t already seen it, get your arses to the Dominion theatre at Tottenham Court Road and get the music experience of… well, maybe not a lifetime, but certainly some of it.
Oh, and even the actors were quite good.
