They’ll conquer us all and rule us with iron fist…

A few months ago Google started quite an intensive ad campaign for their Chrome browser. First, all free newspapers in London were full of Chrome ads, and now I recently noticed huge billboards telling us why we all should use Chrome. One of those billboards is at Victoria Station, right where trains enter and exit the station.
I have used Chrome and it’s a good browser.

Pointless jumping around Internet Explorer

Last week, the German Government warned the users of Microsoft’s browser Internet Explorer that it’s unsecure and people should be using other browsers instead. Then, France joined the call and today also Australia. Bear in mind that it’s not bloggers, hackers or even private companies, but governments!
The problem is that Internet Explorer contains a serious security flaw that could be exploited by hackers.

Camera maker Kodak will sue Apple and Research In Motion (RIM), the makers of the iPhone and Blackberry, over technology used in their handsets, the BBC reports.
Kodak filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC). They allege the iPhone and Blackberry use technology for previewing pictures that infringe Kodak’s patents.
They also filed two separate suits against Apple that claim infringements of patents relating to digital cameras and certain computer processes.

Vodafone sell 50,000 iPhones on first day

Vodafone delivered 50,000 iPhones to their customers on the first day of sales, as the UK’s appetite for Apple’s iconic device continues unabated, the Independent reports.
The group became the third UK operator to offer their customers the iPhone yesterday, four months after Orange announced they had broken O2’s exclusive hold over the phone in Britain. Tesco, which operate their own brand mobile business in partnership with O2, also sell the iPhone.

NASA photograph “trees” on Mars

A NASA probe has sent back photographs of what appear to be trees on the planet’s surface, the Daily Telegraph reports.
The images appear to show rows of dark “conifers” sprouting from dunes and hills on the planet surface.
The scene is, however, an optical illusion. The photographs actually show sand dunes coated with a thin layer of frozen carbon dioxide, or dry ice, less than 240 miles from the planet’s north pole.

Green tea may block lung cancer

According to experts at a medical university in Taiwan, drinking green tea may offer some protection against lung cancer, the BBC reports.
The latest work in more than 500 people adds to growing evidence suggesting the beverage has anti-cancer powers.
In the study, smokers and non-smokers who drank at least a cup a day cut their lung cancer risk significantly. The protection was greatest for people carrying certain genes.

Google’s next smartphone aimed at business users

The next version of Google’s Nexus One mobile phone will be designed with enterprise users in mind and might have a physical keyboard,the Daily Telegraph reports.
The Nexus One, which went on sale in the US last week, is seen as a direct competitor to Apple’s iPhone. The device, made by Taiwanese manufacturer HTC, boasts high-speed web browsing and speech recognition for dictating emails and text messages, and runs Google’s Android operating system.

Complaints greet Google Nexus One

Google are being inundated with complaints about their Nexus One phone, the BBC reports.
Many people are unhappy with Google only responding to questions by e-mail and are calling for them to set up phone-based support.

Panasonic unveiled the world’s largest plasma TV that has a 152 inch screen – equivalent to nine 50 inch panels, the Daily Mail reports.
For optimum viewing you would need to be seated between 25ft and 38ft away.
It has an impressive screen resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels, which is such high definition that viewers shouldn’t see any difference between looking at the display and out a window.

Londoners to get access to data about public services

Londoners are to get access to previously unavailable data about public services free of charge through new “London Datastore” website.
According to London’s website, the plan is part of Mayor Boris Johnson’s campaign to boost transparency and accountability in the capital.
The Datastore will contain over 200 different sets of information and will be fully open for business on 29th January.

Mobile phones protect against Alzheimer’s

An American research shows that mobile phones do not accelerate Alzheimer’s disease, but instead curb it and can even improve performance of those affected.
Scientists in Florida exposed mice to the electromagnetic fields generated by a mobile phone to see how it accelerated Alzheimers. Family of Blade Runner author sue Google over Nexus One name

The family of the late Philip K. Dick, the author whose book inspired the Blade Runner film, are to sue Google for infringement of intellectual property rights as Nexus One shares a model name with the cyborgs used in the film.

Google’s new smartphone, Nexus One, is so far officially sold only in the United States, and will arrive in Europe soon. Google’s website says that it will be sold through Vodafone in spring 2010, but if you can’t wait that long, there is a way to get it quicker.

Google unveil Nexus One smartphone

Google finally revealed their first smartphone, Nexus One, today after months of frenzied speculation about its arrival, the Daily Mail reports.
The phone will be sold through a Google hosted web store. Users can buy an unlocked version in the US for $529 (£331) or with a T Mobile contract for $179 (£112).

Nokia again sue Apple over patents

Mobile phone maker Nokia have launched a second court case in their legal battle with Apple over patents, the BBC reports.
The second case claims that Apple infringed seven Nokia patents in almost all of their products.
The legal action, launched on 29th December, coincided with a similar complaint to the US International Trade Commission (ITC).
Nokia had already filed court papers accusing Apple of infringing 10 of their patents in the iPhone. In that case Nokia said …
