The leader of Iran’s opposition, Mir Hossein Mousavi, has fled Tehran, The Times reports.
Mousavi, defeated in hotly disputed elections in June, left the Iranian capital on a day marked by pro-government rallies at which crowds chanted “Death to Mousavi”. Another of the leaders, Mahdi Karroubi, are also said to have fled.
The news comes three days after Mousavi’s nephew Ali was killed during a protest against the regime in which at least eight lost their lives.

Witnesses reported chanting in support of Mir Hossein Mousavi, who was defeated by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in June’s disputed presidential election.

The first trial of protesters has begun in Tehran, with more than 100 people including senior opposition figures accused of rioting, vandalism and “acting against national security”, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The former president of Iran, Mohammad Khatami, called for a referendum on the legitimacy of the government, following June’s disputed elections, the BBC reports.

According to sources in Iran, six supporters of Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi have been hanged by authorities.
Speaking after Iran’s top legislative body upheld the election victory of incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sources in Iran told Jerusalem Post that the hangings took place in the holy city of Mashhad on Monday.
There was no independent confirmation of the report.

Iranian authorities arrested 70 academics who met with opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi on Wednesday, other prominent dissidents, as well as at least 10 foreign and 26 Iranian journalists have “disappeared” in recent days, Arutz 7 reports.
It is not known where the professors were taken.
Despite the risk, protesters clashed again Wednesday with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s special Basij militia force, which has brutalized many of the demonstrators since the June 12 elections.

Iran’s Guardian Council admitted today that in 50 cities the number of votes cast in presidential election exceeded the number of eligible voters, the Times reports.

Witnesses say police are using tear gas and water cannons to disperse thousands of protesters rallying in Tehran, the AP reports.
Eyewitnesses told the news agency that the protesters gathered in central Tehran in open defiance of the cleric-led government.
