Boris won’t attend Hanukkah menorah lighting

London Mayor Boris Johnson apparently doesn’t have time this year to attend the annual Hanukkah menorah lighting at Trafalgar Square, instead a deputy mayor is attending.
According to Chabad’s website, the Hanukkah Live event at Trafalgar Square on 16th December will be attended by an unnamed deputy mayor, the photo on the Chabad’s flyer suggests it’s Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes.

National Gallery’s director Nicholas Penny says that Trafalgar Square has become completely uncivilised, with loud music and loutish behaviour destroying the tranquillity of the Gallery, the Times reports.
Dr Penny is so concerned by the “bloody awful” state of London’s central square that he would prefer to restore the road that separated it from his gallery before a £25 million redevelopment programme in 2003.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson today lit the giant Hanukkiah at Trafalgar Sq, first making a few jokes and then having some jokes made on him. It was a beautiful and heartwarming event with choir singing, a few quite short speeches and lovely people all around.

After the ceremony small Hanukkias were given away and there was a nice doughnut stand, and I have to tell you, those were the tastiest doughnuts I’ve ever had.
